History and achievements
The football club of Mallorca was established in 1916 on the Balearic Islands and spent their first games on the ground ‘Buenos Aires’ that was opened in March of the same year. Their first game was against Barcelona and it’s no surprise that the team from Catalonia won 8-0. In 1949 Mallorca became a royal club.
The players of the club worth mentioning are Carlos Roa, Juan Arango, Jonathan de Guzman, Pierre Webo, Aritz Aduriz, Angelos Basinas, Miguel Moya, Jonas Gutierrez, Ariel Ibagaza, Walter Pandiani, Lauren, Alberto Riera, Fernando Cavenaghi, Leo Franco, Mark Iuliano, Alberto Luca, Jovan Stankovic, Miguel Angel Nadal, Santiago Ezquerro, Diego Tristan, Samuel Eto’O, Zoran Vulic, Daniel Guiza.
In 2003 Mallorca won the Copa del Rey for the first time in their history, in 1998 they obtained the Supercopa de España, in 1999 they conceded in the final of the UEFA Cup to Lazio. In 2003 they lost the final of the Supercopa de España.
After finishing 17th and nearly leaving the elite of Spanish football in 2011 the Balearic club managed to improve and the season 2011/12 resulted in the 8th spot. However, in the season 2012/2013 the islanders finished 18th and were relegated to the Segunda which came as a shock for their supporters.
The team performs at Iberostar Stadium with capacity over 23,000 viewers.
