History and achievements
Peterborough is a football team that was established in 1934 at Peterborough’s Angel Hotel and replaced Peterborough & Fletton United. The club spent most of its life in the lower divisions of English football pyramid, winning the Midland League from 1956 to 1960. During the late 1960s and early 1970s the team fluctuated between Division 4 and division 3. The farthest the team progressed in the League Cup is the semi-final in the season 1965/1966.
The most successful spell in the club’s history started in 1991 when Chris Turner was appointed a manager in 1991. In the season 2010/2011 Peterborough finished 4th in Football League One and finally received promotion to the Championship.
In 2013 Peterborough United were relegated to League One.
The team is nicknamed “the Posh”, the name appeared in the 1920s when the then head coach Fletton United claimed in one interview he was searching ”for posh footballers for a posh new team”.
The home ground of the club is London Road stadium that sits 14,600 supporters. The arena was built in 1913.
The major rivals of the team are Cambridge United and Northampton Town.
