History and achievements
Hellas Verona, commonly known as simply Verona, was organized as an amateur team by a group of students in 1903. It’s a tidbit that the name Hellas, which is the Greek word for Greece, was given at the request of their professor of Classics.
With the establishment of current professional league in 1929, the club began to carve out the name for themselves in Serie B. Initially, they were not considered as a competitive side but in 1957 Verona proved their strength and professionalism making their first run into Serie A.
The 1980s turned to be fruitful years for the club. They announced themselves on the European scene making a debut in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup. Hellas Verona recorded two impressive runner-up finishes in 1983 and 1984. In 1988, they recorded their best international result climbing up to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals. But their historic campaign was the 1984/85 season when the team claimed their first and only scudetto, or Serie A title.
In the 2000s, Hellas Verona found themselves in Italian Serie B where they struggled for promotion to the top flight again. They finished second in 2012/2013 campaign and returned to Serie A.
The team play their home matches at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in Verona that can hold up to 39,211 spectators.
