Wigan Athletic are one of the youngest teams in the top English football as it was formed in 1932. The club appeared in the highest tier of the English football only in 2005. The nickname of the team is Latics. For 67 years the club played at Springfield Park and only in 1999 moved to DW Stadium that has a capacity over 25,000. The home colors of the team are blue and white stripes.
Throughout its history Wigan played mostly in Division Three and Division Four. The club’s improvement in the performance happened in the 1990s and the team progressed to Division One.
In 1995 a local businessman Dave Whelan purchased the club that played in Division Three at that time and announced his plans to bring Wigan to the Premier League. Eight years later in 2003 the club finished atop of Division One and was promoted to the English Top League.
In 2009 Roberto Martinez was appointed as a head coach. The new manager built a competitive squad that even won Chelsea 3-1. During the last two seasons Wigan stayed at the bottom of the League, securing their place for the season 2012/2013 only on the last match of the season.
The season 2012/2013 was a contrasting one with the club clinching the FA Cup but being relegated from the Premier League.
