Yokohama F. Marinos is a football team playing in J. League Division 1. It was founded in 1973 by Nissan Motor Company. It is based in Yokohama. Initially it was named Nissan Motors F.C. Since 1976 the team played in the second division and in order to strengthen the team in future the management built relationship with local schools and universities.
Its first manager Shu Kamo brought the side to win the 1988/98 and 1989/90 Japan Soccer League Division 1, JSL Cup in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and five Emperor’s Cup tournaments. Since the J. League was formed the Yokohama F. Marinos won J. League Division 1 in 1995, 2003 and 2004, the Asian Cup Winners’ Cup in 1993 and the J. League Cup in 2001.
The team was one of the initial members founding the J. League and in 1998 they merged with Yokohama Flügels so the letter F appeared in its name. Nevertheless many fans refused to support the newly-formed team and founded Yokohama FC.
Yokohama F. Marinos team plays their home matches at Nissan Stadium (it is also named International Stadium Yokohama) or Mitsuzawa Stadium.
