History and achievements
The Belgium national football team is one of the oldest in Europe. Belgium used to take part in all international tournaments in the beginning of the 20th century and today has the 53rd position in the FIFA World Ranking, which isn’t a good showing. The team’s nickname sounds frightening, it is called Red Devils. That’s because of the colors of the team’s uniform and their aggressive style of playing.
The team took part in the World Cup for the first time in 1930 in Uruguay where they didn’t manage to pass the qualifying group. Belgium played in 1/8 finals at the next two tournaments.
The team didn’t perform well up to 1990 when it finally made it to the main round of the World Cup. The team repeated that success in 1994 and in 2002.
Belgium hasn’t achieved success in European tournaments except for 1980, when they finished second, having lost to West Germany in Italy. In other tournaments they were knocked out at group stages or in the qualifying games.
Bernard Voorhoof and Paul van Himst are the team’s all-time top-scorers with 30 goals each. Jan Ceulemans played the largest number of games for the team and Daniel Van Buyten is the team’s captain.
In 2014, under Marc Wilmots, the team qualified for the World Cup in Brazil.
