Bosnia and Herzegovina
History and achievements
The Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team is the youngest in the FIFA and has gained good reputation.
The team made its official debut in qualifying campaign for 1998 World Cup on September 1, 1996, where they lost to Greece 0-3 and finally finished fourth in their group.
Euro 2000 qualifiers turned out to be more successful for them as Bosnia and Herzegovina obtained the third place in the group losing to Scotland and the Czech Republic.
The next World Cup qualifying tournament was a flop. The only team that performed worse was Lichtenstein, while Israel, Austria and Spain surpassed the Bosnian squad.
Bosnia and Herzegovina was on the verge of reaching the European Cup in 2004 but ran a dead heat with Denmark by 1-1, giving way to the Scandinavian team.
The squad performed well in qualifying games for 2006 World Cup where the team finished third in its group. They got 16 points and were 4 points down the necessary number.
During the qualifying campaign to Euro 2008 Bosnia and Herzegovina got the fourth place, scoring 13 points. During that campaign they celebrated their biggest win 7-0, playing against Estonia.
The most significant achievement was made in the qualifying tournament to the World Cup in 2010 where Edin Dzeko became the second best scorer with Bosnia and Herzegovina finishing second in its group staying behind Spain. Unfortunately, the team lost to Portugal twice in the play-off contest, by 0-1 in each leg.
