Álvaro Fernández is a Uruguayan midfielder playing for Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.
The product of Uruguay Montevideo youth system, Álvaro reached the first team of the club in 2005. Having stayed there for a season, he moved to Atenas de San Carlos, but his career really took up steam with Montevideo Wanderers in 2007 for whom Fernández appeared in 43 matches for the 2007/08 season. In the 2009/10 campaign, he moved to Uruguayan top-flight club Nacional ending the season as the Uruguayan Primera División champion. In 2009 and 2010, the midfielder had short loan spells at Portuguese side Vitória and Chilean Universidad de Chile. In July 2011, Álvaro signed a two-year contract with American side Seattle Sounders FC. For two seasons he scored 13 goals in 55 games for the club. In July 2012, he transferred to Chicago Fire.
Álvaro Fernández is capped to the Uruguay national team since 2009. He featured in four matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup aiding his team to finish fourth.
