The Russian National Football League is the second-tier football championship in Russia. The name of the tournament established recently in 2011, when the governing body changed and the Football National League came into power.
Since the end of the Soviet era the tournament has had many formats and today the League consists of 17 clubs. Two best teams get direct promotion to the Premier League while the third and the fourth best ones need to make it through the play-off stage. Two worst clubs at the end of the regular season find themselves out of the tournament.
Chernomorets, Tyumen, Shinnik Yaroslavl, Luch-Energiya and Anzhi are all most successful clubs of the second best Division in Russia with 2 titles each.
Mordovia Saransk and Alania Vladikavkaz have been promoted to the Premier league after 2011/2012 season.
