Sion is a Swiss football club that was founded in 1909 by Robert Gilliard who became the captain of the team and later was appointed as the Vice President.
From the 1930s and up to 1950s Sion played in the fourth division. The first run of the team in the top tier started in 1962 and three years later the club claimed the Swiss Cup, defeating in the final Servette 2-1. The second success in the tournament took place in 1974. In the 1980s the team clinched three more Cups. Overall Sion in the only club that has never lost a Swiss Cup final (12 victories in 12 matches).
The first triumph in the domestic championship dates back to 1992, though five years later Sion achieved even greater result, winning domestic double. In the late 1990s Sion endured financial problems and was on the brink of bankruptcy, but it survived and after a decade of yo-yoing between division 1 and division 2 stabilized and occupied a strong mid-position in the top tier.
The home ground of the club is the multi-purpose Stade Tourbillon that sits 20,187 fans.
