History and achievements
The Switzerland national football team has the 18th position in the FIFA World Ranking. Ottmar Hitzfeld has been the head coach since 2008.
Switzerland gave the way to France and finished second in the qualifying games for 2006 World Cup. After that it defeated Turkey in two games and became the first team to leave the tournament without conceding a single goal. Moreover it is the only team which didn’t manage to score a goal in penalty shootout.
The way to 2010 World Cup wasn’t hard leaving aside the occasional loss to Luxemburg. Having beaten Greece, Israel and Latvia, Switzerland reached the top in its group. But unfortunately the team didn’t play well in the final, got only 4 points and finished third in its group. The team got three out of four points beating Spain, which later became the champion.
Switzerland made its debut in European championships in 1996, where the team managed to draw with England. But after that the team was beaten by Scotland and the Netherlands, and finished on the last position in its group.
The next tournament Switzerland managed to qualify for was 2004 World Cup which wasn’t successful for the team. They shared just one point with Croatia and lost to Germany and France staying on the last position in its group.
