History and achievements
The Ecuador national football team participated in the World Cup qualifying campaign in 1962 for the first time. The team qualified for the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup championships.
Hernán Darío Gómez led the team to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where the team was seeded in one group with Italy, Mexico and Croatia. Though they bowed out at the group stage, they managed to defeat Croatia 1-0.
In 2006 the team succeeded to the Round of 16. Ecuador was drawn in one group with Germany, Poland, and Costa Rica and reached the knockout stage.
In 2007 the Ecuadorian national football team became the Pan American Games Champion.
The best result Ecuador showed in the Copa America was the fourth place in 1959 and 1993.
The team’s captain Iván Hurtado is its most capped player (167) and Agustín Delgado scored 31 goals.
