Champions League results: Malaga 0-0 Borussia Dortmund

Champions League results: Malaga 0-0 Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund were held to a scoreless draw by Malaga in Champions League last-8 first leg at Estadio La Rosaleda.

The German giants, tipped as the heavy favourites to progress to the next stage of the tournament, could count themselves highly unlucky to only draw in their game against Malaga. Despite having a number of attempts on goal, they fail to make chances pay with the Spaniards being exemplary composed at the back and their goalie Willy Caballero again and again denying Borussia attackers. The Argentinian stalwart managed to keep out Goetze twice within the opening 20 minutes of the game, and also denied Reus and Lewandowski in the second half. Malaga’s best chances came from the set pieces with Weligton and Baptista being close to break the deadlock with close-range headers.

Borussia players were visibly frustrated, as they failed to score for the first time in their 2012-2013 European campaign, while Malaga extended their impressive run in Champions League securing yet another decent result. The result means it is all to play for in the second leg.

Borussia playmaker Mario Gotze expressed his disappointment after a stalemate with Malaga, saying: “I could have helped the team out a great deal by scoring at least once. It’s a shame that I wasn’t able to do that. We still have to be satisfied with the result and we still have a return leg.”

Meanwhile Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini revealed he is pleased with the result and expects from the player to deliver the same committed and composed performance in Germany. He said: “I don’t think the game in Germany will be too different from tonight, only an early goal for either team could change things. Both sides went for it tonight and it made for a good open game.”
