Ranking the 5 Most Dramatic Final Days in EPL History

The culmination of each season in the English Premier League - the most-followed league in the world is always a spectacle. Fans of the 20 participating clubs watch the final matches with different aspirations. At the top, someone is looking to wrap up the title, or to secure a top 4 finish that gives them the ticket to play in the lucrative UEFA Champions League.

On the other side of the table, drama is served in equal measure. The fear of escaping the drop to the championship is always real with fans betting on matches with Betway football games. In this article, we look back to some of the most memorable final days in the EPL history.

#1. The AGUERO Magic (2011/12)

New moneybags in town, Manchester City needed a win against QPR at the Etihad Stadium to win their first EPL trophy. At Tyne Wear, Sunderland were losing to City rivals and neighbours Manchester United who only needed City to fail to beat QPR, to secure their 20th.

QPR drew the first blood before Edin Dzeko equalized. City went all out looking for a winner but Kenny Paddy at the Rangers goal answered their every call. Celebrations had started among United players and fans as the clock ticked 93rd minute. Out of nowhere, Italian Mario Balotelli found teammate Sergio Aguero who blasted past Paddy to make it 2-1. What followed was a frenzy. Roberto Mancini and Aguero had won City their first major title.

#2. Liverpool Win the League (1994/95)

At the beginning of the matches pitting Liverpool versus Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham versus Manchester United, Betway88 fans would easily have bet on United to secure the EPL title. Jamie Redknapp scored a wonderful freekick in the dying minutes to hand Liverpool a 2-1 lead. There were no celebrations as most fans expected a routine win for United at Upton Park. Hammers held on to a 1-all draw to ensure the trophy went to Anfield on the final day.

#3. The Great West Brom Escape (2004/05

West Brom had made the bottom spot in the league table their own. They were bottom at Christmas, and on the final day of the season. It was a final day like no other, as no relegation spot had been confirmed. The Baggies beat Portsmouth 2-0, relegating Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Norwich to the Championship after their final day losses.

#4. 42 Points Not Enough for West Ham (2002/03)

It remains a season Hammers fans will loathe for the rest of their lives. With 42 points, that looks like a decent turnover in modern football, but they were not enough to keep West Ham in the EPL. It could have been a case of all teams over-performing.

#5. Blackpool and Birmingham Go Down (2010/11)

There were 5 teams fighting for survival going into the final day of the EPL season. Blackburn beat Wolves at Molineux to survive, and to relegate the hosts. Wigan beat Stoke 1-0 to escape, while Blackpool and Birmingham lost to Manchester United and Tottenham respectively to fill the final slots for relegation. The two sides have never made it back to the EPL.

Fans can look out for more drama as the 2020/21 season continues. All matches are available for betting with Betway88, with different markets and opportunities for the fans.
