World Cup CONCACAF results: Jamaica 0-1 Mexico
De Nigris’ goal was just enough for Mexico to secure a narrow 1-0 win over Jamaica and record their first victory in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifier final stage.
Despite Mexico dominating the game in the first half they failed to convert their advantage into goals, not least of all thanks to Jamaica’s well-organized defense. Breakthrough came for Mexico shortly after the break, as De Nigris scored an opener with a powerful header from Salcido’s beautiful cross. The visitors have several decent chances but their profligacy meant they failed to double their lead.
The result means Mexico are topping their CONCACAF group with six points, one point ahead of the closest rivals Panama, having played one game more than their opposition. Top three teams automatically qualify for 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while the fourth-placed team faces a playoff against New Zealand.
