The Armenian Premier League is the top tier of the Azerbaijani football system founded in 1992. Until 1992, it was considered a regional competition within the Soviet Union.
The league title is contested by 8 clubs usually from spring to autumn. The championship winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League First qualifying round for the next season. The runner-up and the third-placed team get their spots in the Europa League. The team that finish bottom at the end of a season is classed down to the Armenian First League meanwhile a team from the second tier replace it in the top flight.
The most popular Armenian clubs are Pyunik, Shirak, Ulisses, Gandzasar, Banants, Mika and Ararat. Pyunik maintains the leadership as the most titled club amassing 13 league honors. Shirak was the first side to win the title in the inaugural 1992 season. Vage Jagmuryan, the player of Ararat, established himself as a legendary Armenian Premier League striker.
