History and achievements
Genoa is a professional club from the region of Liguria that was established in 1897 by the Englishmen who lived in the city. A year later the team competed in its first football championship and prevailed over the teams from Turin, claiming their first title. Within the following 10 years the Genoa took the trophy 6 times.
Before the season 1914/1915 Genoa appointed William Garbutt as the first professional foreign manager in Italy who was later nicknamed ‘Mister’ by the players. He led the team to top position in the table. After the World War One Genoa claimed their ninth and tenth championship titles, yet during the 1930s it faced a gradual slump and was relegated to Serie B for the first time. Genoa bounced back quickly and even claimed the Italian cup in 1937.
After the Second World War Genoa was no longer a top club, in the late 1950s and mid-1960s rotating between Serie A and Serie B.
During the 1991/1992 UEFA Cup campaign Genoa went to the semi-finals where it was defeated by Ajax. The late 1990s and early 2000s was the most turbulent period in the history of the team as Genoa changed several managers and faced financial troubles. In the 2011/2012 season Genoa finished 17th.
The nicknames of the club are the Old Fool and the Griffin.
