Essien looking forward to Chelsea return

Essien looking forward to Chelsea return

Michael Essien anticipates his return to a parent club Chelsea, with his deal at Real Madrid expiring at the end of the season.

The defensive midfielder has been considered a surplus to requirements at the Stamford Bridge, as he recovered from a severe injury. The 30-year-old Ghanian has been offloaded to Real Madrid on a season-long deal. Real Madrid boss Jose Murinho was happy to land the player who was an important part of his squad, during his spell with Chelsea.

Essien has established himself a valuable first-team member at the Santiago Bernabeu, making 30 appearances in all competitions. However Real Madrid are unlikely to sign the player on a permanent deal, as there is uncertainty whether Mourinho remains in charge of the club after the season ends. He said: “I have a contract at Chelsea and at present I am only on loan here, so nothing has changed.”

Essien revealed he has been monitoring the events at Chelsea this season, and believes the Blues have what it takes to end their frustrating campaign on a high note. He continued: “They can still win trophies in the cups this season, so people shouldn’t write them off yet. I have followed Chelsea all season and although it hasn’t been as planned at the start of the season, I think it’s down to the fact that it is a transitional season.”
