UEFA Champions League play-off ties on 21 August

FC Dynamo Kyiv earned a convincing 3-1 victory over VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first-leg.

Alexander Ring’s opener gave the lead to the hosts, but Taras Mykhalyk and Andriy Yarmolenko responded with two goals. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Luuk de Jong ended the game with a goal into his own net nine minutes from time.

The Swiss side FC Basel 1893 made a good start with Marco Streller, who gave his team the lead. But Modou Sougou cancelled out the Swiss lead with an equalizer. And in five minutes Sougou brought CFR 1907 Cluj ahead, scoring the winning goal.

Kris Commons and Giorgos Samaras led the Scottish Celtic to 2-0 victory over Helsinborgs in Sweden.

FC København defeated LOSC Lille1-0. It was César Santin’s header that gave the hosts the lead in the play-off first leg.

Spartak Moscow secured a slender 2-1 advantage over Fenerbahce. In 14th minutes of the second half Emmanuel Emenike opened scoring and gave the Turkish side the lead, but in six minutes Dirk Kuyt scored an equalizer and 21 minutes from time Dmitri Kombarov ensured Spartak with a narrow lead.
