Jupiler Pro League is the top professional tournament in Belgium where 16 clubs contest the title. The season starts in July and finishes in May. Each team plays 30 matches during the season, with one “home” and one “away” games, than entering into either into play-off 1 where top 6 teams compete for the first places or into play-off 2 where clubs from 7th to 14th places compete against each other. The teams that finishes bottom and second to bottom take part in the relegation play-offs. Play-off phase is usually played from March to May.
The champion of the League and a runner-up enter into the 3rd round of the UEFA Champions League. The teams that finish third and fourth take part in the Europa League qualification.
The league was established in 1895 with only 7 teams playing in the tournament. Throughout the league history 74 clubs competed in the tournament and 15 managed to win the title. RSC Anderlecht is the most titled side with 31 trophies; Brugge KV won 13 titles, Union Saint-Gilloise took 11 and Standard Liège 10. The tournament changed a number of names during its history, including Coupe de Championnat (1895-1904), Division I (1904-1926), Division d'Honneur (1926-1952), Jupiler League (1993-2008) and Jupiler Pro League.
The current format of the tournament was introduced before the season 2009/2010 when the number of teams decreased from 18 to 16 and a standard system was abandoned.
The top scorer of the league is Albert De Cleyn with 350 goals.
