Primeira Liga (currently Liga Zon Sagres) is the top Portuguese football league. The tournament was founded in 1934 and throughout its history three main teams (Benfica, Porto, and Sporting) claimed the trophy 75 times in total. The league is ranked the 5th best in Europe. From 1938 to 2000 the tournament had the name Primeira Divisão (First Division).
Benfica has won the league 32 times, Porto claimed 26 titles and Sporting took 18 trophies. These teams also have the highest attendance figures.
In the season 2006/2007 the number of teams contesting the title was reduced from 18 to 16.
