History and achievements
Chelsea FC was founded in 1905. It’s arguably the most popular football club among Russian fans as it was purchased by Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich in 2003. Chelsea has seen only a couple of seasons in Division Two, while most of the time it’s been playing in Division One.
Stamford Bridge stadium, constructed in 1887, the home one for Chelsea FC, is actually situated in Fulham area of London, not Chelsea. The stadium can hold up to only 43.000 fans, which makes it the ninth in England. The club completes the ‘Big Four’ group and along with Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool established the Premier League. These four clubs also have most silverware in English football. The total value of the players is the sixth in the world.
Home kit includes blue shirt and shorts and white socks. The badge of the Blues has only been changed slightly since formation of the club. The manager of the team is Roberto Di Matteo who replaced recently fired Andre Villas Boas. Despite him being a top-flight coach who has led Porto FC to Europa League title, the club’s executives had no doubts in sacking him.
Among the significant clashes of this century it’s worth mentioning the Champions League final in Moscow where Chelsea and Manchester United faced each other. The Manchester club clinched the victory on penalties.
Here are some of the greatest players of the squad: Didier Drogba, John Terry (the captain), Petr Cech, Frank Lampard, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata. As of the official site of the club the Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech was named the best Chelsea player of the year 2011. Many players groomed at the Club’s football school play on loan in main squads of some of the best teams of Europe. Chelsea’s ladies football team also plays on high level in English Championship.
