History and achievements
One of the top 3 Dutch clubs that has never been relegated from the top flight is Feyenoord from the city of Rotterdam. The team was founded in 1908 as the club Wilhelmina in the pub De Vereeniging.
The team changed several titles until 1912 when the name SC Feijenoord appeared. In 1917 the team was promoted to the 1st division. It was not long before they claimed the first title of the Dutch championship, finishing atop of the league in 1924. Feijenoord kept its consistency, finishing first in the Dutch championship in 1928, 1936 and 1938 and claiming the Dutch Cup in 1930.
After the war the club stayed in mid-table mediocrity, though the year 1961 marked not only the sixth championship, but the period when the team from Rotterdam became an incomparable side in both Netherlands and Europe. In the 1960s Feijenoord won two doubles of the Championship and the Cup, also claiming in the season 1969/1970 European Cup.
Despite transformation of the name to Feyenoord that happened in 1973, the club’s fortunes did not change and the team continued clinching the trophies throughout the 1970s and 1980s , winning 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 UEFA Cup , 3 Dutch championship titles and 3 KNVB Cups.
After the glories period, Feyenoord enjoyed moderate success in the late 1980s, and was even struggling to avoid relegation in the season 1989–90. The team came back to the elite in the 1990s, celebrating victories in Dutch Cups (1991, 1992, 1994, and 1995) and winning the Eredivisie in the season 1992/1993. The last achievement of the club is 2002 UEFA Cup.
The club’s home arena is Feijenoord Stadion which is nicknamed De Kuip, Dutch for The Tub. The stadium was constructed in 1937. It can hold up to 51,117 fans.
