History and achievements
Stoke City is a football club established in 1863. The club is the oldest one in the Premier League and the second oldest professional club in the world. The nickname of the team is ‘The Potters’, Stoke received the name after the pottery industry highly developed in Stoke-on-Trent.
Stoke was one of the clubs that in 1888 set up the Football League although throughout its history the team struggled to secure a place in the top-division. The first major trophy of the club was 1972 League Cup when the team outperformed Chelsea 2-1. Stoke city celebrated two victories in the Football League Trophy in 1992 and 2000.
In 1997 Stoke moved to a new site called the Britannia Stadium. Soon afterwards an Icelandic consortium purchased the team. The new owners changed several head coaches but that did not bring Stoke to a higher result in the League and later on Peter Coates was appointed as a manager.
In 2008 the club was promoted to the Premier League gaining this success for the first time in last twenty-three years. Three years later Stokes reached the final of one of the most prestigious tournaments in Britain - the FA Cup. Stoke clashed with Manchester City but was defeated 0-1. Reaching the final, Stoke got a qualification for the 2011/2012 Europa League.
