2014 World Cup play-off: Uruguay hammer Jordan
Uruguay have all but secured participation in 2014 World Cup after thrashing Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of intercontinental play-off on Wednesday night.
Maxi Pereira opened the scoring on 22 minutes, Cristian Stuani, Nicolás Lodeiro, Cristian Rodríguez and Edinson Cavani added to the hammering.
The return leg next Thursday becomes a mere formality, but Uruguay coach Óscar Tabárez was not completely satisfied with his side’s performance:
“There are countless ways of winning in football. Today we didn’t play well but we have very good finishing.”
Jordan chief man Hossam Hassan admitted that his players are simply no match for experienced South American counterparts:
“We lost because of the difference in experience between the two teams. We tried with all the effort we have and we will try again in the second leg.”
