History and achievements
Cardiff City is a football club from Wales that was founded in 1899. Cardiff is the only side outside of England that claimed any major English trophies. Overall Cardiff City spent 15 seasons in English top league football.
The original name of the team was Riverside A.F.C and it was created with the purpose of keeping cricket players in shape during the wintertime.
The most successful period in the team’s history started in the 1920s. The club was considered one of the strongest teams in Britain, progressing to the final of the FA Cup in 1925, yet losing to Sheffield 1-0. Two seasons later Cardiff clinched the title, outplaying Arsenal in the ultimate match. The season 1923/1924 saw the team finishing runner-up in the top flight.
In the season 1964/1965 the team competed in the European competition for the first time. Two seasons later Cardiff reached the semi-final of the Cup Winners Cup.
Cardiff City claimed the title of the Championship in 2012/2013 season and got historic promotion to the Premier League. However, they were relegated back in the first season.
In 2012 the club’s crest and colors were rebranded by the new Malaysian owners. The nickname of the team is the Bluebirds. The home stadium is Cardiff City Stadium that can sit up to 26,828. The main rivals are Newport County and Swansea City.
