History and achievements
Inter was established on 9 March 1908 as a group of members from Milan Cricket and Football Club left the team and decided to set up a new club. They were unsatisfied about the fact that Italians dominated in Milan and the name of the team implies that foreign players are accepted as part of the squad. The emblem of the team was designed by a painter Giorgio Muggiani.
Inter claimed its first domestic title in 1910, but 18 years later under the fascist rule the team was forced to join the Unione Sportiva Milanese and was reformed as Società Sportiva Ambrosiana. In spite of this fact the fans continued to call the club Inter. After the World War II it took its original name again.
Helenio Herrera is one of the most important figures in the history of the club. He came to Internazionale from FC Barcelona and transformed the club into one of the greatest european teams. Herrera was called ‘ll Mago’ (the Magician) after he had brought the club to two league titles and two European Cups in 1964 and 1965.
The 1990s was a period of decline. While the rivals AC Milan and Juventus were successfull both on domestic arena and in Europe, Inter was lagging behind and showed mediocre results.
The coach that returned Inter to the elite was Roberto Mancini who brought the club victories in Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italaino and two consecutive championship titles. The next coach of the club José Mourinho gained even more winning first ‘treble’ in the history of Italian football. Under his helm Inter collected the titles of the 2010 Coppa Italia, 2009/2010 UEFA Champions League and the Scudetto. Later the team won the Supercoppa Italiana 2010. Overall he club’s history boasts 18 national titles, 7 Italian cups and 5 Italian Super cups. The European titles include 3 Champions League trophies, 3 UEFA Cups and 1 UEFA Super Cup.
The season 2011/2012 was less successful for the team as Inter finished 6th with 58 points.
Inter shares its home ground Stadio Giuseppe Meazza with A.C.Milan. The site can hold up to 80,000 supporters.
The nicknames of the team are the Cherished One, the Big Grass Snake.
